Did Yahweh Have a Consort-Wife?
From Sarai: Is She the Goddess of Ancient Israel?
by
D’vora Lederman-Daniely

“…critical study of the ancient Israelite religion [Judaism] has shown that despite the monotheistic presentation in the Bible and the interpretations of sages, commentators and translators, the ancient religion of Israel did include a Goddess. This Goddess was Asherah, and She is mentioned (throughout) the Bible:
“From 2 Kings 23:7: "He tore down the cubicles of the male prostitutes in the House of the Lord, at the place where the women wove coverings for Asherah.”

Scholars have deliberated whether this biblical Asherah is a ritual object such as a living tree, wooden figure or forested place of worship—on whether indeed Asherah is the name of a Goddess.

One educator, Ahituv believes Asherah was a ritual object or tree used for worship. He bases this theory on the term "asherim,” which were sacred ritual objects, the biblical prohibition to plant an asherah, and the commandment to cut off the asherah (for example in Exodus 34:13).”

[My note: In one translation this passage reads “But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves…”.
In another: “But you shall demolish their altars, shatter their monuments, and cut down their sacred trees.”]

“In contrast, Biblical scholars Olyan, Gilula and Ackerman are among those who maintain that Asherah is definitely a divine entity, and if in some places She (capital ‘S’ mine) appears as a ritual object, the object represents the Goddess.”

I have a question: If people were commanded to cut down an Asherah or not plant one in the first place, isn’t that proof enough of Her divine nature and power? Do we need to keep looking for academic “proofs” that this Goddess and those of many names before Her have been worshiped for millennia?

True, it’s nice to see material archaeological evidence come to light, but just sayin’:::

Lilith: Wild Woman - Survivor - Rebel - Goddess - She Who Dares
Join us as we explore Her many aspects and energies in our new
9-week Lilith Circle!

Open to 20 women

I am delighted to announce that Iyanifa Luisah Teish, Dr. Vivien Monroe and I will be launching our first Lilith Circle this July (separate from our Lilith’s Fire Circle program), joining circles started in Bergen, Norway, New York and other parts of the world. The idea of manifesting such circles around the world is the vision of Girl God Books Founder Trista Hendren and Girl God Partner Monette Chilson; the intimate heart- and spirit-centered group study circles are based on the stories women tell in the anthology Original Resistance: Reclaiming Lilith, Reclaiming Ourselves.
Join us as we explore the many aspects and energies of Lilith in this exciting new Circle over nine weeks!  As Trista and Monette write:
Together we will map a trail back home to our true selves,
where self-doubt and shame will no longer hold you hostage.

We will invoke powerful forgotten myths and archetypes that will liberate, inspire, and guide us to remember who we are.

Expanding Our Inner Resources

Dear Friends,

I hope this message finds you safe and in good health. As we are all too aware, the outer landscape continues to be rocky and unpredictable, but with care and attention, our internal landscape can look quite different. In these surreal times, we have the opportunity, indeed the imperative to call on and expand our inner resources, both for our own sake and that of our families. These resources, which we need as much as the air, can restore our spirits, enhance our ability to live in the unknown, renew our hope. They are all vital, if we are to be able to sustain ourselves, to come together with the shared vision and commitment needed to co-create a new present and future. It is these resources which can nourish our resilience and strengthen our resolve, day by day, hour by hour, to push through even when we feel we are facing a constantly-unfolding tsunami.

What is Lilith’s Fire Circle?

What is Lilith’s Fire Circle?

  • It is a sanctuary in which we can create sacred, supportive, caring community
  • It is a circle created for us to learn, to hear each other and really be seen by each other
  • It will feed the fire that lives within each of us -- in our nefesh, or animal soul, our ruach, our life force, our neshama, the self, the "I" that inhabits the body
